LURAY, Jan. 25 — The Luray High School girls basketball team picked up three wins last week before Monday night’s game at East Rockingham was postponed due to COVID protocols related to the Eagles. That game has been rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 29.
LHS senior Emilee Weakley scored 92 points over three games last week, including 36 points at home against Madison County on Saturday. The Shepherd University signee put 28 points in district wins over Rappahannock on Wednesday and Clarke on Friday.
Junior Jaidyn McClung posted a double-double in the Bulldogs’ 62-40 win over Rapp last Wednesday, recording 14 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Amber Tharpe scored nine points in the win.
Luray jumped out to a 19-7 lead after the first quarter against Clarke on Friday night, and grew that to a 42-17 lead by halftime. The Bulldogs hit six three-pointers in the first half, including four in the first quarter. Weakley hit three from beyond the arc, while Tharpe hit two. McClung finished with 11 points behind Weakley’s 28. The PVN Sports crew broadcasted the game and named Weakley the Blue Ridge Bank Player of the Game.
On Saturday, Madison held the home-standing Bulldogs in check for the first eight minutes and lead 9-8 at the end of the first quarter. Weakley only scored four points in the opening quarter. However, she would end up with a game-high 36 points on the day as Luray pulled away to lead 30-17 by half en route to a 62-36 district win.
Luray (13-2 overall, 7-1 Bull Run) will host Mt. View on Wednesday before traveling to Madison on Friday. The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 17 overall in girls basketball in Virginia and No. 2 in Class 2.
LHS boys drop three district games
LURAY, Jan. 25 — After an 83-54 win over Mt. View on Jan. 5, the Luray High School boys basketball team went on “COVID pause” for 16 days. Since getting back in action on Friday, the Bulldogs dropped three district games in four days.
Luray fell 51-34 to Clarke on the road Friday. Sophomore Christian Lentz led the ‘Dawgs with 11 points, followed by senior Kenny Frye with eight. Luray had beaten Clarke 51-43 at home back on Dec. 17. That was followed by a 62-41 loss at Madison on Saturday, and a 68-40 loss to East Rockingham on Monday at home.
On Monday night, East Rock jumped out to a 25-4 lead after the first eight minutes and held a 40-15 advantage at the half. Lentz again led Luray with 12 points on the night followed by junior Bailey Graybeal with 11 and senior Calder Liscomb with nine. But the night was dominated by UNC commit Tyler Nickel who lead all scorers with 32 points, including a trio of three-pointers and a few slam dunks. The PVN Sports crew broadcasted the game and named the East Rock senior the Blue Ridge Bank Player of the Game.
Luray (2-9 overall, 1-4 Bull Run) will travel to Mt. View on Wednesday before hosting Madison on Friday.
PCHS boys pick up win on Senior Night
SHENANDOAH, Jan. 25 — The Page County High School boys basketball team celebrated Senior Night on Friday with a 69-47 district win over Strasburg. The Panthers posted all five starters in double digits and grabbed a needed win in the Bull Run.
Senior Dylan Hensley lead the way for the Panthers with 17 points on the night, followed by 12 points each from seniors Caden Good and Chase Parlett. Seniors Ricky Campbell and Caleb Knighton both added 11.
Page County (4-10 overall, 3-5 Bull Run) will travel to Rappahannock County on Wednesday before hosting Clarke County on Friday. PVN Sports will be broadcasting the Clarke game Friday night.
PCHS girls fall to Rams
SHENANDOAH, Jan. 25 — The Page County High School girls basketball team fell, 41-32, on the road at Strasburg Friday night. The Panthers outscored the Rams 9-5 in the third period after trailing 24-18 at the half. However, the narrow two-point deficit would grow in the final frame as Strasburg went on a 12-5 run over the final eight minutes to close out the district win.
Page County (6-8 overall, 4-5 Bull Run) will next host Rappahannock County for Senior Night on Thursday (rescheduled from Wednesday) before traveling to Clarke County on Friday.
