Apartments razed to make way for fire hall

Luray-Cave Hill

June 18, 1987 — The Lewis Long apartment building on Luray’s East Main Street was demolished last week by Oscar Sours Contractors to make space for a new Luray Fire Department headquarters building.

LFD president Philip Harrell said the volunteer group is moving “due to cramped quarters, lack of parking and larger modern equipment” at its present building on Vogt Place. He said the site choice represents the culmination of three years of study and searching.

The Long building previously housed the Blue Ridge Creamery and earlier was the site of Judd’s General Store and Puffenbarger’s Barber Shop.
