Age 94, Shenandoah, Va.
Betty Lee Grimsley, 94, of Shenandoah, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Life Care Center of New Market, Virginia. She was born May 16, 1930, in Pine Grove, Stanley, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Charles Bernard and Stella Mae Gray.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Kemper W. Grimsley and 11 siblings: Hazel Gray, Nellie Collins, Eva Campbell, Aldine Gray, Leon Gray, Bobbie Jean Patterson, Charles Gray, Shirley Ann Elliott, Wayne Gray, Dixie Gray and Rhoda Turner. She was the last of 12 children in her family.
Betty was employed at the Knitting Mill and Alliance Manufacturing in Shenandoah. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Shenandoah where she attended for many years and was a Sunday School Teacher. Betty was a member of the Shenandoah Volunteer Fire Company Honorary Ladies Auxiliary and the Shenandoah Rescue Squad. She had been a member of the Red Hat Society, Shenandoah Crafters and the Grove Hill Friendship Club. Betty was a devoted volunteer at Page One in Shenandoah for over 25 years. She loved canning, gardening, crafting, caregiving and storytelling. Betty enjoyed telling her childhood stories including a publication “The 1850 House Still Survives” in the book Paper Dolls and Homemade Comforts, Tales from the Good Old Days in Northwestern Virginia.
Betty is survived by two sons, Waymie Comer Jr. and wife, Kathy of Shenandoah, Billy Foltz and wife, Wanda of Shenandoah; granddaughter, Roberta “Robbie” Wright and husband, Ricky of Elkton; great-grandson, Ryan Wright of Elkton. Numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
A Graveside Service will be conducted 1 p.m., Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Shenandoah with Pastor Tarja Stevenson officiating.
Family and friends may visit the home of Ricky and Roberta Wright on Sunday, September 1, 2024, from 1 to 6 p.m., or Billy and Wanda Foltz, 800 Maryland Ave., Shenandoah, Virginia, Monday, September 2, 2024, during the hours of 1 to 6 p.m.
Viewing hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
