October 17, 1986 — The Page County School Board Monday night rejected the single bid received on the former Mandes property in west Luray.
Following a closed session of nearly two hours to discuss the land transaction and personnel matters, the board voted unanimously to reject the $160,478.49 bid from Luray Caverns Corporation.
The land, just off the U.S. 211 bypass near the Luray Caverns property, was purchased in 1977 for a then-proposed new Luray senior high school. The 70-acre plot known as the Mandes property cost the board nearly $175,000 and the adjacent 7-3/4 acre Willis property added another $35,000.
Plans for the senior high school were later dropped in favor of renovating the old school on Luray Avenue.
