Junior grappler reaches championship match, finishes state runner-up

~ PVN staff report

LURAY, March 11  — This week’s PVN “Athlete of the Week” honor goes out to a Page County High School junior who made history two weeks ago at the Henrico Sports Complex in the VHSL Girls State Wrestling Tournament. Bri Bracken became the first Panther wrestler — in the program’s 10-year history, boy or girl — to reach the state finals. While she did not win the championship match, Bracken went further than any other Panther on the mat and finished as state runner-up in the 120-pound weight class.

“She came up short, but she was in that match the whole time,” PCHS head wrestling coach Greg Martin said of Backen’s last bout of the season.

The junior came out strong and was only down 9-6 when she was pinned by Roberts from Riverheads in the third period. This was a rematch from the previous week at the zone qualifier in which Bracken dropped a 16-4 decision. She finished 3-1 at the state tournament and a state runner-up in the 120-pound weight class.

Bracken qualified for the state tournament after finishing in the top four at a zone qualifier on Feb. 18 at Franklin County High School. She went 5-1 at the zone qualifier to take third place in the 120-pound weight class.

The Page County wrestling program also reached a new milestone in mid-February when the Panthers earned their first region titles on the mat. Three of the seven local grapplers that participated in the Region 2B wrestling tournament on Feb. 14 at Strasburg High School earned a spot in the VHSL Class 2 state wrestling tournament at the Salem Civic Center.
