Vacancy created after Painter’s uncontested bid for school board chairman

LURAY, Jan. 15 — During its meeting on Thursday evening, the Page County School Board appointed former school board chairman Jason Breeden to fill the vacancy in District 4. The appointed term runs through the end of 2026.

“In his application, Mr. Breeden stated that he is ‘eager to contribute to the continued advancement of student achievement and to support the mission and values of Page County Public Schools’,” according to a press release issued by the school division on Friday.

Breeden fills the void left in District 4 after Duane Painter successfully won an uncontested bid for the chairman’s seat this November. The school board is expected to petition the court to order a special election this upcoming November to fill the remainder of Painter’s term through Dec. 31, 2027.

Breeden was appointed chairman by the Page County School Board in the summer of 2020 to replace James “Jim” Grimley through Dec. 31, 2020. The November 2020 special election carried that appointment through the remainder of Grimley’s term, which expired Dec. 31, 2021. Breeden won 72 percent of the vote in 2020, where his only competition was Megan Gordon, who won 28 percent of the vote as a write-in. Gordon defeated Breeden 12 months later with 74 percent of the vote. The program director of Page Alliance for Community Action decided not to run for re-election in November.

Breeden has worked in several school divisions across the state in different capacities, including the Page and Shenandoah County school divisions.

QUESTIONS IN DISTRICT 5

Charles Queen Jr., who won a two-way race in the November election for the District 5 seat on the school board, suddenly resigned (possibly earlier this week or last week) just as his four-year term had begun with the new year.

On Monday, the school division posted the vacancy in District 5 without any explanation.

Unofficial reports have indicated that there may have been problems with some of the information provided in candidacy qualification reports and/or financial reports.

Page Valley News is attempting to get further details this week.
