Freshman Caroline Donovan records game-high 22 points

LURAY, Jan. 3 — The Luray Bulldogs dominated the Mountaineers of Madison County at home Friday night behind a game-high 22 points from freshman phenom Caroline Donovan. Eight of the 10 Bulldogs on the roster recorded points during the district win, which evens Luray at 1-1 in the Bull Run.

Despite coming off a 38-35 district win over Page County on Dec. 20, the Mountaineers shot a dismal 20 percent from the floor, going 9-for-45 on the night with no triples. Meanwhile, Luray hit 45 percent of their shots and recorded seven three-pointers, including four from Donovan.

The Bulldogs outscored the visitors in all four quarters, including a 16-4 run in the first and a 36-10 lead at the half. Luray’s stingy and persistent defense held Madison scoreless in the fourth quarter and helped force 21 Mountaineer turnovers during the game. Luray had 10 turnovers.

Madison only went to the foul line three times during the game, going 2-for-5. By contrast, Luray’s freshman center Emily Benson made seven trips to the charity stripe, going 9-for-14. As a team, the Bulldogs went 16-of-29 from the line (55 percent).

Complimenting Donovan’s perimeter shooting, Benson played well in the paint for Luray and finished with 11 points. Junior Ella Parlett also recorded 11 points on the night, while junior Shyla Blackie had six and sophomore Gracie Stillwell added five.

For the Mountaineers, sophomore Ayana Green lead the way with six points, while junior Tristen Weaver recorded five and senior Willa Lewis had four.

After facing tough Class 3 opponents through most of the early, non-district schedule, Luray (1-1, 2-7) now faces Bull Run opponents for the rest of the season. Up next, the Bulldogs travel to Quicksburg on Tuesday (weather permitting) to face Stonewall Jackson at 7:30 p.m.

Madison (1-1, 4-6) is scheduled to travel to Strasburg on Tuesday.
