Mountaineers’ Brown rushes for 231 yards, four TDs, 16.5 yards per carry

MADISON, Oct. 11 — The Luray Bulldogs dropped their district opener on the road Friday night at Madison County’s homecoming, 48-33. The Mountaineers leaned on senior running back JB Brown, who rushed for 231 yards and four touchdowns — all on runs of 45 yards or more.

Junior Cason Bryant led the Bulldogs with 139 yards rushing and four touchdowns, including a 29-yard run in the second quarter to bring Luray within a touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Ayden Haddock sprinted 26 yards down the sideline for the Bulldogs’ first score in the opening quarter.

In addition to Brown, Madison got a great performance from junior quarterback Aaron Fincham, who completed 8-of-11 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 32 yards on five attempts. Senior Will Dickey caught five passes for 144 yards and two TD receptions.

Brown broke the game open early on a 63-yard run for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Haddock’s 26-yard run followed with 6:58 left in the first quarter to knot the game up at 7-7. Brown would scored his second touchdown 42 seconds later.

Brown would score twice more, on runs of 45 and 51 yards, with 9:44 still left in the first half. Madison went up 20-7 after Tylee Coats missed her only extra point of the game. Bryant tacked on his 29-yard touchdown run to bring the Bulldogs to within six at 20-14, with 6:41 left in the half.

However, each time Luray scored, Madison seemed to have an answer. Dickey caught his first touchdown reception, a 69-yarder, less than a minute later putting Madison ahead, 27-14. Stephan Turner then caught a 51-yard scoring pass with 1:43 left in the first half putting the Mountaineers ahead 34-14 at the break.

Bryant and Brown traded scores in the third period — Bryant on a 6-yard run with 7:06 remaining and Brown, a 60-yard run 17 seconds later.

Zach Giglotti’s 1-yard run 30 seconds into the fourth quarter and a one-handed grab in the end zone by Dickey with two minutes left in the game, put the Mountaineers up 48-27. Bryant scored Luray’s final touchdown with just under a minute left in the game. The PAT was blocked.

Madison grabbed its first Bull Run win in its district opener, 48-33, behind the strong running of Brown, who averaged an amazing 16.5 yards per carry. In addition to his 231 yards on 14 carries, he also caught one pass for nine yards. His four touchdown runs went for 63, 45, 51 and 60 yards, respectively. Two more apparent scoring runs of 67 and 36 yards by Brown came back due to holding penalties. The Mountaineers lost 115 yards to flags including five for major yardage.

The Mountaineers (1-0, 3-3) will travel to Central (1-4) next Friday night, Oct. 18 for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Falcons were forced to forfeit several games for a rules violation involving a transfer student and will be a much tougher opponent than their 1-4 record might indicate.

Luray (0-1, 1-5) will host undefeated Strasburg (6-0) next Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. The Rams are coming off a 50-7 victory over Page County on Friday night at home. Strasburg and Clarke (5-0) remain as the only two unbeaten teams in the Bull Run District.
