Buffalo Gap’s Simmons hurls two-hitter in complete game effort

LURAY, March 28 — The Luray Bulldogs gave up two big innings to Buffalo Gap on Friday, while also struggling at the plate in an 11-1 non-district loss in six innings. Despite a 3-0 victory at Gap on March 17, Luray could only muster two hits and now evens out the season at 3-3.

Buffalo Gap’s Cooper Simmons hurled a complete game through six innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out six. However, the sophomore’s two-hitter also included six walks. Coupled with a single by Luray junior Landon Wood, Simmons gave three batters a free trip in the bottom of the first and walked in the Bulldogs’ only run.

The Bison would post five runs off four hits in the first, and five runs off five hits in the fourth. The visitors tacked on one additional run in the sixth off Luray’s only error of the game. Simmons, along with sophomore Brandon Argenbright and junior Grayson McCall, all went 2-for-4 at the plate. Argenbright belted a double to centerfield that cleared the bases in the first inning after a diving catch effort came up short. He ended up with 4 RBI for the game. McCall also knocked in two runs, while senior Cooper Cline went 1-for-2 with a walk, hit by pitch and a two RBI-single in the fourth.

Luray got its other hit from sophomore Eli Wood, a single in the third. Three Bulldog pitchers, including Wood, gave up a total of 10 earned runs on 11 hits in six innings. The Bison left four runners stranded. Thanks to six walks and despite only two hits, Luray still stranded seven runners during the game. The home team threatened to have a big inning in the first, but left the bases loaded. The Bulldogs then left two runners in scoring position in the second.

With the win, Gap splits with Luray and moves to 2-1 on the season. The Bison roam to Quicksburg on Monday, March 31 for a non-district matchup with Stonewall Jackson at 6 p.m.

With the loss, Luray evens out with Gap and stands even on the season at 3-3 after sweeping Rocktown in two games and getting swept by East Rockingham. Next up, the Bulldogs enjoy spring break next week and then travel to Quicksburg to face the Generals on Tuesday, April 8.
