Strasburg scores on six of nine possessions; while Luray fumbles on three of last five offensive drives

LURAY, Oct. 18 — The Strasburg Rams maintained their undefeated status with a 42-0 romp of Luray at Bulldog Field on Friday night. Sophomore Quincy Williams was the only 100-yard rusher of the game, with 111 yards on only five carries (22.2 avg) and two touchdowns for the Rams. Strasburg scored on six of nine possessions during the game, while Luray fumbled the ball on three of its five offensive drives in the second half.

Junior Cason Bryant lead Luray in rushing for the second-straight week, with 79 yards on 14 carries (5.6 avg). Sophomore Ryan Jenkins ran for 43 yards on 10 carries (4.3 avg) — all in the second half, after being withheld from play in the first two quarters.

Overall, the Bulldogs put up 143 yards of offense, while allowing the Rams to accumulate 367. Both teams leaned on the ground game, with only seven combined passes for 48 yards. Luray was able to pick up nine first downs on the night, but was only able to extend two of its nine drives. The Bulldogs best drive came late in the first quarter and extended into the second, lasting almost seven minutes, when they traveled 43 yards on 11 plays before the Rams blocked a 37-yard field goal attempt.

Strasburg opened the game with its longest drive of the night, covering 70 yards over nine plays and taking 5:23 off the clock. Senior Takhi Coates scored on a 30-yard touchdown reception for a 7-0 lead. Luray would then pick up one first down and punt, before launching a defensive stop on a 4th-and-5. The Bulldogs then kept the ball for nearly seven minutes before coming up empty on the field goal attempt.

Over the final 6:50 of the first half, Strasburg would score twice — Williams capped off a six-play drive with a 35-yard breakaway touchdown run, and junior quarterback Brayden Hough finished another six-play drive with a 29-yard sprint to the end zone. The Rams would carry a 21-0 lead into halftime.

Luray opened up the second half by fumbling on the second play, giving Strasburg the ball on the Luray 36-yard-line. Two plays later, Coates rambled 34 yards for his second touchdown of the night and a 28-0 lead. Coates finished the night with 75 yards on seven carries (10.7 avg) and one touchdown, plus a receiving touchdown.

After one first down, Luray punted the ball back to the Rams, who scored again four plays later when Williams recorded his second touchdown, putting Strasburg up 35-0. Once again, Luray picked up one first down and punted the ball back to the Rams. This time, senior Riley Walker took the punt all the way “to the house” for a 74-yard score and a final 42-0 lead with 1:L15 left in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Luray fumbled twice and Strasburg punted once. The Rams’ replacements would run off the final 3:12 of the game and secure their second Bull Run win.

Strasburg (2-0, 7-0) will travel to Clarke County (2-0, 7-0) next Friday night, Oct. 25, for what will be the biggest regular season game of 2024 in the Bull Run District.

Luray (0-2, 1-6) will host Central (1-1, 2-5) next Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs conclude the season in November by traveling to Clarke on Nov. 1 and hosting rival Page County (0-2, 2-5) in their regular-season finale on Nov. 8.
