LURAY, April 17 — The Luray Bulldogs struggled at the plate on Thursday against Strasburg, only producing four hits, while making six errors in the field. The Rams belted 11 hits off three Luray pitchers en route to an, 11-2, Bull Run District win on the road at Bulldog Field.
Strasburg junior Aiden Atkins struck out nine and gave up no walks in six innings of work on the hill. Atkins allowed two earned runs off four hits and collected the win. Luray pitching gave up two unearned runs in the top of the fourth after three consecutive hit batters (total of four hit batters and two walks in the game).
Junior Harper Sherman led the Rams at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a single, a double and three RBI. Junior Brady Flynn also went 2-for-4 with a single, a double and one RBI. Sophomore Gavin Dellinger was the only other Ram with more than one hit, going 2-for-5 with a single and a double.
Luray was lead by junior Lawson Wood, going 1-for-2 with an RBI. Junior Connor Hilliard, sophomore Eli Wood and sophomore Braylen Brooks all went 1-for-3. Sophomore Trey Guzy picked up an RBI off a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the fourth.
The Rams scored in every inning, except the first and the last. After picking up four runs in the fourth, Strasburg carried a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning, when Guzy’s fielder’s choice scored Luray’s first run. The visitors carried an 11-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth — just three outs from ending the game early — when Landon Wood’s only single brought in Nick Cubbage, to extend the game to the seventh.
Senior Peyton Dean relieved Adkins on the mound in the seventh and recorded three-straight Ks to end the game. In addition to their 11 hits, the Rams only committed one error in the field.
Strasburg moves to 8-1 on the season and 4-0 in the Bull Run. The only loss this season for the Rams came to James Wood early in the season. Next up, Strasburg travels to Madison (2-1, 3-6) on Tuesday, April 22 for a 6:30 p.m. start.
Luray (1-2, 4-5) drops its second-straight Bull Run matchup and now faces district-leading Central on the road in Woodstock at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22. The Bulldogs will host rival Page County (0-4, 1-8) three days later at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 25.
