STANARDSVILLE, Sept. 13 — A temporary lockdown Friday morning at Luray High School didn’t affect its football team that rolled into Martin Mooney Field hours later and put a 35-6 beatdown on William Monroe.

The lockdown lasted about 30 minutes while Page County Sheriff’s Office investigators handled an apparent suicide incident on nearby U.S. Route 211 west of the town. Once the Bulldogs headed east across the Blue Ridge and into Greene County, they rolled up 314 yards of offense and limited the Dragons to 185 yards.

Luray (1-2) led 22-0 early in the second quarter on touchdown runs by Cason Bryant and Ryan Jenkins. The Bulldogs added a safety and an interception return for another score.

Bryant’s touchdown capped a nine-play, 65-yard opening drive culminating on the 10-yard run. Senior kicker Jakob Choat’s first of four extra points sailed through the uprights for a 7-0 lead with 7:17 left in the first.

Penalties backed Monroe (1-2) up on its first series, made worse when a high snap into the end zone forced punter Brendan Strickland to kick the ball out of the end zone for an extra two points for the Bulldogs.

Jenkins, who finished the game with 174 yards on 15 tries, scored on a 49-yard run giving Luray a 16-0 advantage just eight minutes into the game. Chance Beahm’s midfield interception of William Monroe quarterback Cale Hamblin pushed Luray’s lead to 22-0 early in the second period.

The Dragons then put together their only sustainable drive of the game, going 65 yards on 15 plays, capped by Hamblin’s one-yard keeper with 4:10 left in the half. Lucas Shifflett fumbled the ball after picking up five yards on the second play, but lineman DJ Moore pounced on the pigskin seven yards up field. A fourth-down reverse by Shifflett netted 15 yards to keep the drive alive, and Hamblin hit Shifflett and Quinn Hawkins for two passes netting 27 yards. The point-after failed leaving the score 22-6.

The Bulldogs added another score late in the period when Bryant ran in from the 6.

Monroe head coach Mitchell Morris fired up his team at halftime forcing Luray into consecutive three-and-outs. But the Dragons couldn’t capitalize on either opportunity, punting on their first chance and turning the ball over on downs on the second try.

Luray scored for the last time with 7:06 left in the game when Jenkins ran in from 46 yards. The Bulldogs challenged late in the game for another score, but twice went into victory formation from the 10.

Caleb Cyphert gained 73 yards on five carries for the Bulldogs, and Bryant had 65 yards on 11 tries.

Shifflett led the Dragons with 36 yards on seven attempts. Hamblin proved successful completing 6 of 12 passes for 72 yards. Hawkins led Monroe with five completions for 62 yards.
