November 28, 1965 — Hungry bears in Shenandoah National Park again have slashed tents and frightened campers in their search for food. Two of four bears slashed the tents of a Richmond Boy Scout Troop and a honeymooning couple at Big Meadows Campgrounds on Sunday. No one was hurt.
Authorities said the bears have passed up the regular fat-building forest foods in preference for the goodies given them by the summer’s tourists. Now, as winter hibernation approaches, the bears have little fat on them and are having trouble sleeping.
The weekend before, a bear slashed several tents of another Boy Scout Troop, slightly injuring one scout.
