August 9, 1987 — “The bells have been ringing for 50 years.”
Former U.S. Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. keynoted a special commemorative ceremony at the Luray Singing Tower Saturday with praise for the 47-bell memorial to Belle Brown Northcott and the family which conceived and supported it.
“It’s a great day for Luray and the people of this community,” he said to a crowd of some 60 persons gathered at the base of the 113-foot stone structure.
The tower was dedicated in 1937 as a gift to the town from Col. T.C. Northcott and his daughter, Katherine Northcott Graves, in memory of Northcott’s wife.

The Luray Carillon has begun its recital season for 2025. Recitals occur Saturdays @ 7, Sundays at 3.
We go back up to the low rock wall, set out folding chairs and have a picnic for dinner. We have friends that usually join us.
I have to say I am profoundly disappointed in the lack of attendance at these recitals. Luray and Page do absolutely nothing to promote these events. So, if anyone wants a fun, free event that is great for family, friends, or lovers, this is for you. Kids can play on the huge lawn too.
Your survey question this week about spending $200 million on building a new ballroom at the Whitehouse failed to mention that the money is coming from donations from President Trump’s friends and not tax payer money.
