October 17, 1987 — Luray chili chef Yates Dameron topped a field of 17 competitors at the fourth annual Page County Heritage Festival chili cookoff Saturday at the Page Valley Fairgrounds. Dameron’s “Chili Joe’s” recipe won for the second year in a row. Second place went to Don Chaney of Phoenix, Md., and third and fourth places were taken respectively by Jeanne and Del Smith of Burke. The cookoff, coordinated by Sheldon Wimpfen of Luray, collected $676.99 in contributions for the Luray Volunteer Fire Department.
