SHENANDOAH, Feb. 27 — Over the weekend, the Page County High School Athletic Department announced on social media that Coach Alan Knight will be enshrined into the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Hall of Fame during ceremonies scheduled for Sunday, April 28 in Charlottesville.
Coach Knight has collected more than 1,000 wins across three sports and lead Panther teams to seven state championships — four in volleyball and three in softball. He becomes the second Page County Panther enshrined in the VHSL Hall of Fame behind the baseball legend Buddy Comer.
“Twenty years into hanging out with Head Coach Alan Knight as his self-proclaimed PR guy…I am over the Moon that we finally got the news,” longtime friend Jerry Carter stated online Saturday.
Carter worked with those who knew Knight best to put together a nomination packet to present to VHSL on behalf of the longtime Page County coach.
“I wanted to take the time to publicly express my gratitude to each person that worked with me on getting the nomination packet put together,” Carter stated online. He specifically credits Rebecca McDowell, former assistant superintendent of Page County Public Schools Eric Benson, and former Page News and Courier sports editor Bill Meade.
Carter donated funds and spear-headed an effort prior to last season to build the new batting cages at the softball complex, as well as previous efforts to construct fencing, and have the diamond named the Alan Knight Field.
