June 28, 1989 — Five state troopers from Luray are among the hundreds of state police officers that have been sent to southwest Virginia to act as a peacekeeping force as union coal miners of the Pittston Coal Group continue to strike.
The officers include: Troopers Russell Montgomery, Shelton Weatherholtz, Phil Hagwood, Donnie Weaver and G.K. Phillips. The local group is now in its second tour of duty as the strike enters its 12th week.
No agreement has been reached between striking Virginia miners and the Pittston Coal Group and with wildcat strikes occurring in Alabama, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Missouri and Tennessee, there is no indication when the strike may end.
