42 points breaks single-game record at PCHS set in 2016
“That’s the all-time [single-game] scoring record here at Page, he broke 41 tonight previously set by my old teammate Tyler Williams [in 2016],” PCHS head coach Tyler Parker said after Tuesday’s dominating district win. “We didn’t think it was going to happen [tonight]… but we’re just thankful that it happened tonight. He’s an incredible player and an incredible person…been coaching him since fifth grade really, so seeing him grow into a mature adult is something special.”
Combs said he had a goal of breaking the record ever since he became a Panther.
“I always wanted to break the school record, but I also wanted to hit ‘1K’ really early in the season, just so like I could keep going off it, carry the momentum. It was kinda my goal to break the school record my whole high school career,” Combs told PVN after the game. “It feels good. I knew the previous record holder…I played against him in open gym…when we played against each other I kinda had that grit against him, to always want to beat him and beat the record.”
Having one of the top talents in the region on your squad is certainly an advantage, but Coach Parker said that Combs understands that it will take the full efforts of the entire Panther team in order to do well in the postseason.
“I think he does a lot of assisting as well…he’s not all about getting points, he actually leads our team in assists…if I had to guess, he’s probably leading the district in assists…so he’s not a selfish player at all,” Coach Parker said. “His senior year he’s probably been the most unselfish I’ve ever seen him…so, for him to be ‘the guy’ but also get everyone else involved, it’s only gonna help us down the line… and he has been all year, he’s been getting everyone involved.”
Combs will definitely play a key role in how the 2025-26 Panthers end up this season, but after joining the 1000-point club and breaking the single-game scoring record, how does he stack up among the all-time Panthers on the court?
“He’s up there…I’m not gonna put a number on it…he’s certainly the guy I’ve had the last three years, and I couldn’t be more proud of him…he’s a special talent,” Coach Parker said earlier this week. “I’m not gonna put a number on where he ranks, but he’s up there… and we still have a lot of history to write. We haven’t had much playoff success with this team, this squad, since I’ve been here, so really that’s only gonna help his legacy down the line…so there’s more history to be made.”
Up next, Page County (4-1, 8-5) will be traveling to Madison County to face the Mountaineers (1-4, 3-9) for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on Friday, Jan. 16. Next Tuesday, Jan. 20, the Panthers will host county-rival Luray (3-2, 8-3).
