January 24, 1962 — Gerald D. Hartley, 40, who escaped from the federal penitentiary at Greenville, S.C., on Jan. 12, was apprehended near Luray last Thursday night by Page County Deputy Sheriff Aldine Painter.
Hartley was turned over to FBI agents and is being held in Harrisonburg.
Officers quoted Hartley as saying that he escaped from the penitentiary on Jan. 12, stole an automobile in North Carolina, traveling from there to his home in Nettie, W.Va., he was en route to Washington, D.C., when apprehended here.
