Final days of Safeway

Luray panoramic

August 17, 1986 — Long lines of customers with filled grocery carts jammed the Luray Safeway Store on East Main Street this week when all items were offered at 50 percent off in advance of the store’s permanent closing this Saturday. The grocery chain announced last month that it would close the Harrisonburg and Luray stores because of “inability to compete” with other stores in the area due to Safeway’s high labor costs. The chain has not announced what disposal will be made of the 22,000-square-foot building which opened here in 1964.
