Finding homes

HISTORY-Lee highway builders

March 29, 1887 — Mr. A. Schlegel, southern agent for the New York Children’s Aid Society, was in Luray last Monday evening with a view to ascertaining the probability of being able to find homes among the citizens of this county for a number of lads from 12 to 16 years of age.

The Association of which he is agent is one long established, and has for its object the getting of homes for homeless boys of New York City. Mr. S., when here, was on his return from Florida, in which state he has recently placed about 20 boys. A few weeks ago he located a number in Loudoun County, as has also been done in many sections of the state.

In a few weeks he will furnish us for publication a statement of the conditions, upon which these boys will be given to any of our citizens who may wish to have them. In the meantime we would be glad to have the names of any parties, who, if the conditions suit, would want these boys. The Society furnishes them with substantial clothing and pays their fare.

Aside from the kindness and humanity of giving a home to a homeless and friendless boy our farmers might find it greatly to their interest to secure some of them, being compensated by their services, for which, of course, they are required to pay nothing, at least for the first year, except their maintenance.
