Fire house caretaker proposed

Luray-Cave Hill

January 22, 1961 — Mayor H.B. Dyche recommended to the Luray Town Council on Monday evening of this week that consideration be given to the full-time employment of a caretaker at the Luray Fire House. He pointed out that not only would this greatly facilitate response to fire calls but that it would insure regular maintenance of equipment and upkeep of the property.

To finance such an undertaking he proposed a flat tax of 50 cents per month on all water users which he said would distribute the expense equitably among property owners. He pointed out that in case of a call, a resident caretaker could have the engines warmed up, ready to go, and likewise after use of the machines the caretaker could occupy himself by putting the equipment back in first class condition.

“In all probability such a man would pay for himself and greatly speed answers to calls,” the Mayor said.
