September 13, 1987 — Four firemen from Stanley’s Volunteer Fire Department were flown west to assist with combating the fires which have ravaged thousands of acres of forest land, according to Fire Chief Terry Pettit. Pettit said Keith Higgs, Jamie Rickard, David Keyser and Tony Stoneberger flew Sunday afternoon from the Weyers Cave Airport to North Carolina and on to Oregon. He added that the men were part of a group that assists the Department of Forestry with fighting fires on a regional basis and may also be called upon to assist in firefighting nationwide. Pettit said the men will be stationed in Oregon about two weeks.
