August 18, 1911 — The Luray Fire Department will leave for Newport News next Tuesday morning. About 25 or 30 members are expected to go. The reel team has been in daily practice for the last two weeks.
The fare to Newport News for uniformed firemen is $5.10 for the round trip or about a cent a mile. Other persons can go at a reduced rate. The Fire Company will probably return Saturday.
Our boys won the state prize of $100 last year and are the custodians of the silver trumpet, which if they win again this year will become the property of the company.
The Homecoming Committee in view of the heavy expense and hard work undertaken by the Fire Company in connection with the Homecoming celebration appropriated $100 of the surplus left from the undertaking toward this trip. The Homecoming fund raised by the firemen was considerably more than this amount.
