Fluoridation begins

March 11, 1989 — The Town of Luray will begin fluoridation of its water Monday, according to a public notice. Town Manager Ronnie Good said the town has had the pumps and other equipment for some time.

“We do have everything tested and ready to go,” Good said Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s a milestone in public health,” said Luray dentist Neil Mayberry, whose presentation to the town council resulted in an unanimous decision to add fluoride three years ago.

Some opponents of water fluoridation contend that it causes cancer, heart disease and other maladies. Mayberry told the town council three years ago that the process has been endorsed as safe and effective by the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization among other groups.
