Garland Lee Long

Garland Lee Long, 86, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Monday, July 8, 2024, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, in Charlottesville, as the result of a fall.

Mr. Long was born on April 9, 1938 in Page County and was a son of the late John Bernard and Lillian Lucille (Grisham) Long. Garland retired as Assistant Manager from A&P Grocery after almost 40 years. He was a member of Muhlenberg Lutheran Church in Harrisonburg. He enjoyed gardening and yard work, and loved mowing grass. He also enjoyed singing and poetry. Mr. Long was an avid sports fan, especially the Washington Nationals. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his grandchildren and attending their events.

On June 5, 1960, he married the former Shelby “Jeannie” Comer, who survives.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Long is survived by his children, Kevin Long and wife, Rochelle of Bridgewater, Kim Vaughan and husband, Stacey of New Market; grandchildren, Jackson Long, Alli Seifert, Peyton Vaughan, Nina Vaughan, Ben Seifert; and special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Diane and Wylie Walton. 

Garland was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Molly Long; and was the last surviving of eight children.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at 11 a.m., at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Pastor Alex Zuber officiating. Burial will be held privately prior to the service.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening, July 12, 2024, from 6 until 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
