Age 75, Elkton, Va.
Gloria Jean Basden, of Elkton, Virginia passed from this earthly life on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at UVA Medical Center, at the age of 75.
Miss Basden was born August 14, 1948, in West Virginia and was the daughter of the late Dorothy E. Jones Moton. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her son, Antonio Basden Sr.; step-father, William A. Moton Sr.; brothers, William A. Moton Jr. and James E. Jones Sr., and sisters, Loretta E. Moton Blair and Rosetta L. Moton.
Gloria was a graduate of Lucy Sims School in Harrisonburg, Virginia and upon completion of high school, she went immediately into a brief career with the FBI. She left the FBI to associate herself with Providence Hospital in Washington D.C, where she worked as a Medical Billing Technician until her retirement and moved to the Valley in 2010.
Gloria was a member of Mt. Paran Baptist Church, Elkton Virginia, yet was closely affiliated with Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Shenandoah Virginia, and surrounding churches. She would boast and tease about studying and quoting her favorite scripture “Jesus wept.” Knowing more scripture than that; she would walk into any church, any service, give you that smile, and that slight wave, then take her seat!
Anyone who knew Gloria could count on a good story which usually led to laughter, the kind that brought tears, yet she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind to any and everyone. She loved a good movie, was affectionately considered the “bag lady”, also loved being around family and attending family functions. Gloria never met a stranger, and she had a good memory for details and names. Our lives are much better for having known or experienced a close relationship with Gloria Jean.
Surviving to cherish her memory are a grandson, Antonio Basden Jr.; sisters, Sylvia Moton-Bostick, and Cynthia James (Arthur) all of Elkton; a brother-in-law, Reginald Basden (Carol) of Raleigh NC.; aunts, Edith Banks and Beatrice Jones; uncle Bennie Toliver; her special friends, “Little Rayon” and Annie Barrett, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, family and friends.
A memorial service honoring the Life of Gloria will be held Friday, October 6, 2023, at 3 p.m., at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton, with Rev. Theresa Woodson officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
