LURAY, Sept. 15 — It seems to be a natural fit.
“Thrift stores have always been my thing,” Christy McCoy told those crowded into her new store in the East Luray Shopping Center last Friday.
She got her love of thrift shops from her grandparents…well at least her grandma. Grandpa sat in the car patiently, while Christy and her grandmother went in search of the best bargains.
“She was always looking for something for her family,” Christy said, “but she always got me something too.”
On July 17, McCoy launched “Good as New to U” with shelves filled with everything from household items to jewelry and apparel. The store will buy entire storage units to diversify its stock, or trade store credit to those who bring in items. One constant thing in this store, is change.
“Keep coming back because a store like this always has new things,” Chamber President Gina Hilliard told the group crowded into the store on Sept. 15. A few dozen attended the grand opening and ribbon cutting hosted by the Luray-Page County Chamber of Commerce.
“We always love to see a vacant store front filled,” Mayor Jerry Dofflemyer said. “We have had so many ribbon cuttings…things are going well.”
The new thrift store sits in the location of a former pet store, adjacent to a hair salon and Skyline Hardware. The hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Whether it’s DVDs, clothes, kitchenware or jewelry, “Good as New to U” always has a wide variety of items marked at more than reasonable rates.
“Our area is poverty-stricken and they have needs,” McCoy said last week. “They can’t afford to get some things, so I try to provide things they use or want.”
The store is already developing its “regulars” who check the shelves almost daily for a new bargain, and McCoy says the store’s policy of providing store credit for items brought in has been popular.
“The community just loves that,” she replied.
McCoy previously owned a thrift shop in a different area, and ever since relocating, has been looking for the right opportunity locally. Now, she believes she’s found just the spot.
“I’m in my element,” Christy says of the store. “I love working with the public, talking with people…helping people that may not have much.”
She sees her business as a way of helping people — and she loves helping people.
“This is a way for me to have work, and I have brought my family into that, so it provides a living for them as well,” McCoy said. “But ultimately, the real reward is the relationships we build with our customers and knowing that we really helped some of them out with something that they really needed…that’s what makes it worthwhile.”
