Three juniors and one sophomore return for 2026 campaign

LURAY, Dec. 2 — Luray High School junior Trey Guzy was the only first team selection among five Bulldogs that earned spots on the All-Region 1B football squad following the completion of the region playoffs last week.

Guzy earned first team all-region honors at linebacker and was a leading tackler for Luray this season. Senior Cody Hoke was a second team defensive selection at defensive line, while sophomore Mason Cubbage was a second team defensive back. Cubbage was one of only five sophomores to earn a spot on the all-region team.

The Defensive Player of the Year for Region 1B was Altavista’s senior defensive back Christian Garvin.

On the offensive side of the ball, junior Caleb Atwood was a second team offensive line selection, while junior Ryan Jenkins was a second team running back honoree. Jenkins was a 1,000-yard rusher for the Bulldogs this season.

The Offensive Player of the Year for Region 1B was Buffalo Gap’s senior running back Isaac Goff. The Bison’s head coach Brad Wygant was voted Coach of the Year.

In the Nov. 14 region quarterfinal at Luray, Goff recorded all three scores for Gap in a 21-6 first round victory — all in the second half, all within about 13 minutes of game time. Not only did he lead all rushers with two touchdowns and 151 yards on 18 carries (8.4 ypc), Goff also snagged an interception on defense midway through the fourth quarter and ran it back 50 yards for a pick six that capped the game’s scoring for both teams.

As the fifth seed in the region playoff, Buffalo Gap would go on to beat No. 1 Altavista, 52-29, in a region semifinal, and No. 3 Riverheads, 48-21, in the Region 1B championship. However, the Bison fell in the state quarterfinals over the weekend, 38-32, to Region A champion Rappahannock (Northern Neck region – not Sperryville).

Now, Rappahnnock takes on Region D champion Ryan Cove for the VHSL Class 1 state football championship at 5 p.m. this Saturday, Dec. 13.

Luray finishes the 2025 season at 6-5 — a big improvement over the previous season’s mark of 2-8.

“We only graduate six, so hopefully they use this as motivation,” Coach Lynn “Skip” Hamilton said following the region quarterfinal loss to Gap.

Last month, nine Bulldogs were named to the Bull Run All-District team. With a core of solid players who gained great experience this season, Coach Hamilton believes that the Bulldogs are rebuilding a program that will truly live by the motto “no quit, just grit”.

“I mean we had a great run this year. We went from 2-8 to 6-4 and were in two games that were close that we probably could have won,” he said after the Nov. 14 postseason game. “If they just keep the ‘no quit, just grit’ attitude, hopefully we can continue with that and just build on it.”
