Harry Earl Byrd

Age 75, Shenandoah, Va.

Harry Earl Byrd, 75, of Shenandoah, passed away peacefully after a lifelong battle with hemophilia with his wife by his side, on Monday, August 12, 2024 at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Mr. Byrd was born on January 21, 1949, in Washington, D.C. and was the son of the late William Earl and Gladys May (Breeden) Byrd. He worked as a Machine Operator for Genie for many years prior to his retirement. Mr. Byrd was a dedicated member of the Shenandoah Pentecostal Holiness Church. He read and studied his bible every day. Harry also kept a daily journal. He enjoyed writing poetry and listening to music. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his grandkids. Most summer evenings, Harry and his wife could be found watching a baseball game, usually his beloved Baltimore Orioles.

On September 19, 1970, he married the former Deborah Kay Saylor, the love of his life and high school sweetheart, who survives.

In addition to his wife, Harry is survived by a granddaughter, Joana Rose and fiancée, Hunter Lam; great-grandchildren, Dallas and Rosalie Lam; sister, Gwennie Shiner; special brother-in-law, Gary Saylor; special sister-in-law, Ellen Koontz; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Lee Byrd Rose; a granddaughter, Jenna Rose; his brother, Wayne Byrd; and a sister, Deborah Lou Harlow.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 10 a.m. at Shenandoah Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Jimmy Kite officiating.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening, August 16, 2024 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests all memorial contributions be made to the Shenandoah Pentecostal Holiness Church, 300 Shenandoah Ave., Shenandoah, VA 22849.

Arrangements are being handled by the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, Va.
