Helen Looker Freeze, 91, of Shenandoah, Va, a beloved mother, granny and friend, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 1, 2025 at her home.

Helen is survived by her children, Sandra Collier and husband, Tony, Rebecca Freeze, G.R. Freeze, Jr. and wife, Carla; her grandchildren, Tiffany Kite and husband, Timmy, Autumn Lucas and husband, Craig, Christopher Freeze, Nathan Walker and Taron Freeze; her great-grandchildren, Trent and Taite Kite, Dakota Hensley, Allyssa Lucas, Parker and Preston Walker and Taron “T.W.” Freeze, Jr.

Helen had the privilege of forming close bonds with the children of her best friend, Neva Shifflett, who remained like family to her over the years.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Fran Russell; step-father, Chounce Russell; brothers, Robert Turner and William Looker and three infant children.

Helen had a fulfilling career and cherished the memories made at various workplaces, including Gables Hotel, Governors Employees Insurance Company, BF Goodrich and S&S Fashion, where she worked alongside her best friends, Neva Shifflett and Betty Shuler. She later retired from Merck & Co.

In her youth, she played basketball and softball for Elkton High School. Her passion for sports continued into adulthood as she played for various teams. In her later years, Helen found joy in supporting her grandchildren in their sporting events and sharing stories of her days playing basketball and softball.

Helen was also a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Elkton. She loved “her church” and “her church family” dearly. Prior to working shift work, she enjoyed serving her community by volunteering with Shenandoah Rescue 1. She was also known as the 4H’r, her love of all things red, her well-manicured yard/flowerbeds and embracing anything outdoors.

Helen touched the lives of many with her warmth, kindness, humor and boundless love; her laughter and spirit were infectious, which fostered strong connections with her family and friends. Helen’s memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and a passion for life that will be celebrated and remembered by all.

A Funeral Service will be conducted 2 p.m., Friday, June 6, 2025 at First Baptist Church in Elkton, with Pastor Scott Campbell, Rev. Warren Grant and Pastor Jimmy Kite officiating. Burial to follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 5, 2025 at First Baptist Church in Elkton.

Arrangements are being handled by the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, Va.
