Hensley, Wood earn All-State in cross country

Page County juniors Asher Kite and Aaron Hensley performed well at the 2024 VHSL Class 2 state cross country championships on Nov. 16 at Virginia Tech. Hensley finished 11th and earned All-State honors, while Kite finished 22nd among 102 qualifiers.

LHS girls finish 5th, LHS boys 9th at Class 2 state XC meet at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Nov. 16 — Two local runners earned All-State honors on Saturday at Virginia Tech in the VHSL Class 2 state cross country championships. Luray’s Annah Wood finished ninth among 93 qualifiers in the girls division, with a time of 21:13. Page County’s Aaron Hensley posted an 11th place finish among 102 runners in the boys division, with a time of 17:04.2.

Hensley, a junior, is the first male cross country runner from Page County High School to earn all-state honors since 2006. Classmate Asher Kite finished 22nd (among 102 runners) at the state meet on Saturday, with a time of 17:40.9.

The Luray girls cross country team took fifth place in Class 2, while the Eagles of Clarke County earned second place by just one point behind state champion Floyd County. Tazewell senior Abigail Rhudy won the state title with a time of 18:58.3.

Top local finishers in the girls division behind Wood at the state championship included Luray junior Carolina Wood (22:37.0 – 28th among 93 runners); Luray sophomore Isabela Rizek (23:33.6 – 39th); and Luray sophomore Maya Jenkins (24:28.7 – 51st).

The Luray boys cross country team finished in ninth place overall, while Clarke County took the state title. The Eagles placed three runners in the Top 10 and four in the Top 15. Floyd County finished in second place, and Stonewall Jackson HS in Quicksburg earned fifth place.

The top two runners for the Bulldogs’ boys team were senior Davey Johnson (17:34.7 – 18th among 102 runners) and Wyatt Seal (17:59.6 – 32nd).

The boys state champion was Floyd County’s Mason Erchull, who ran the 5000 meters in 16:15.7.
