Bulldogs host Broadway and travel to East Rock this week

LURAY, Dec. 2  — The Luray Bulldogs got off on the right foot last Tuesday night with a season-opening, 72-52, win over visiting East Rockingham thanks in large part to a 26-point performance by senior Connor Hilliard.

After going 0-7 in season openers, Coach Matt Huff got that monkey off his back and is now focused on what could be a deep post-season run for the Bulldogs.

“I just think this is the start of something really, really special. I hope we can continue it,” he said after Tuesday’s 20-point win. “To be honest, we’re still kinda disrespected by everybody in the district and the region…I mean even though we’ve had really good runs, it’s still kinda like ‘Oh they got lucky’… so we use that as motivation. I tell the guys that all the time…people still don’t believe, so we gotta go out there every day and make them believe.”

Hilliard is a key part of that vision. Against East Rock, the senior went 6-for-8 at the line and recorded a hat trick of three pointers. Last month, he signed his National Letter of Intent to play baseball at James Madison University.

“Connor, for the last two years, as a sophomore and junior, has been a guy that can do everything. He can shoot it from the outside, he can score it on the inside, he can attack, he rebounds, he shares the ball…and tonight he did a little bit of everything,” Coach Huff said last Tuesday. “He scored on the inside, he made some threes, made some free throws, shared the ball…he was big for us tonight.”

Luray (1-0) will host the Gobblers of Broadway at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9, before traveling to East Rock for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Thursday, Dec. 11.
