Ida Bennett Holmes Butler, 88, of Luray, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 31, 2024, at Winchester Medical Center.
Born on July 8, 1936, to the late Haywood Thomas Holmes and Ruth Elizabeth Beach Holmes, Ida was a cherished member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Luray. Her faith and her community, especially her quilting group, were central to her life. Though she faced the challenge of blindness, Ida continued to quilt with joy and actively stayed connected with the loved ones who enriched her life. The gatherings of her family, especially her beloved sons, brought her profound happiness. Ida had a true love for cooking and was already anticipating the joy of preparing her Thanksgiving meal.
On August 12, 1955, she married Roy Franklin Butler, her devoted husband of nearly 60 years, who preceded her in death on March 7, 2015.
She leaves behind two sons, Jerry Butler, and Walter Butler and his wife, Carol, both of Luray; a sister, Lucille Holmes Price of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Julia Berger, Jeremy Butler, Jonah Butler, and Shannon Lillard; and four great-grandchildren, Akasia, Brayden, Skylar, and Waylon. She is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Ruth Lee Sampson.
Ida’s life was defined by grace, love, and resilience, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6, at Bradley Funeral Home in Luray, with the Rev. R. Nicholas Eichelberger officiating. Friends may visit from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
