Jail crowding not unusual

August 8, 1989 — The Page County jail is experiencing some crowded conditions, according to Sheriff E.M. “Pap” Sedwick. The jail has a capacity for 24 inmates but the jail is currently housing 33.

“We have seen more coming in,” the sheriff noted. “It’s up and down and varies from day-to-day.” Sedwick said that overcrowding is not unusual and that other localities are experiencing the same thing.

“They (prisoners) are experiencing overcrowding wherever they go,” he said. “If they go to Shenandoah County, it’s overcrowded there. It they go to Warren County it’s overcrowded there. It’s just a way of life at the time.”
