Age 89, Luray, Va.
The Rev. Dr. James Randolph “Randy” Elrod Sr., 89, of Luray, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023, surrounded by his family and dear friend Debbie Campbell.
He was born on October 1, 1934, in Habersham, GA, and was a son of the late James Alvester Elrod and Nettie Beatrice Moody Elrod. He grew up in Gastonia, NC.
In 1961, Rev. Elrod earned his undergraduate degree from Gardner-Webb University and was ordained. He went on to earn his graduate degree from Wake Forest University in 1963 and graduated from Seminary School at Wake Forest in 1967. He earned a degree in Geriatric Studies in 1974 from the University of Michigan and a Doctrine in Theology from Covington Theological Seminary in 1983.
Rev. Elrod was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving as a staff sergeant from 1952-1960. He went on to serve as an Army Captain Chaplain and was honorably discharged in 1968. He was a life member of the Ranlo Baptist Church in Gastonia, NC.
On April 1, 1956, James married Ellarree Whitlock Elrod, who died on August 17, 2019.
He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Stanley and husband Shane of Luray; a son, James R. Elrod Jr. of Martinsburg; two sisters, Joyce Stroup of North Carolina, and Doris McNew of Kingsport, TN; four grandchildren, Aaron Good, Alyssa Roach, Ryan Roach and James Elrod III; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Ensley; and a brother, Allen Elrod.
Services are planned for a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by The Bradley Funeral Home in Luray, Va.
