James Verlyn ‘Jim’ Veater

Age 95, Rockingham, Va.

Major James Verlyn “Jim” Veater, USMC Ret., 95, of Rockingham, VA, passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg, VA.

Jim was born on February 25, 1929 in Clovis, NM and was a son of the late Glenn and Ruth (Allen) Veater. Jim entered the Marine Corps at 17 and rose through the ranks to retire as a Major. Jim was a proud Marine earning numerous awards and medals. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he worked as a Consultant for Texas Instruments for numerous years.

Jim was an avid golfer. He loved playing golf during his time at Bryce Ski Resort in VA and later at Cat Island, SC. Golf was more than a hobby for Jim and he won numerous trophies. Jim had many golfing buddies both at Bryce and Beaufort and he valued those friendships very much.

On January 12, 1973 he married the former Gladys Jaspering, who preceded him in death on January 31, 2012.

Mr. Veater is survived by his children, Von Veater, Tina Rule and husband, Billy, both of Shenandoah, VA; grandchildren, Kyle Veater and wife, Chelsea of Richardson, TX, Brett Veater of Phoenix, AZ; and a great-granddaughter, Norah Veater.

In addition to his wife and parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Veater.

Burial will be held privately and at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests all memorial contributions be made to the Shenandoah County Animal Shelter, 268 Landfill Road, Edinburg, VA 22824.

Arrangements are being handled by the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, Va.
