James W. “Bill” Austin, 87, of Shenandoah, passed away July 4, 2024, with family at his side. He was born February 24, 1937, in Shenandoah, Virginia, and was the son of the late Philip (Heck) Austin and Grace Lee Beaghan.
Bill’s life was a testament to his unwavering dedication to the Shenandoah Assembly of God and his beloved community. His commitment and hard work marked his 22-year tenure as a chemical operator at Merck and Company. Bill’s involvement in the Shenandoah Rescue Squad, the Shenandoah Fire Department, and the Shenandoah Moose Lodge as a charter member showcased his selfless service. His love for antiques and his passion for various projects in his buildings reflected his creative spirit. He cherished his dogs, Scooter, Susie, and Ellie Mae, which were a constant source of joy.
On October 25, 1955, Bill married Frances Ann “Blondie” Pennington. Together, they embarked on a journey of love and companionship for 65 years. Their enduring marriage was a testament to their deep bond and mutual respect.
He is survived by sons, Larry Austin and wife, Gloria and Gary Austin of Shenandoah; grandchildren, Scott Austin and wife, Rhonda of Ruckersville, Chad Austin and wife, Amber of Stanley, and Derrick Austin and wife, Julie of College Station, TX; great-grandchildren, Graham, Garrett, Gavin, Hayleigh, Karleigh, Chayse, Nataleigh Austin and Chloe; sister, Phyllis “My little Angel” Vaughan and brother-in-law, Eddie Vaughan; and very close friend, Frank Durrett.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, July 7, 2024, at Shenandoah Assembly of God at 310 Comertown Road in Shenandoah, with Pastor Carter Dean officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Lebanon Church Cemetery in Shenandoah.
Friends are invited to visit at Shenandoah Assembly of God Church, 310 Comertown Road, Shenandoah, Saturday, July 6, 2024, from 3 to 7 p.m. or any other time at Bills’ home.
