Cougars of Stuarts Draft on tap for season’s second game
The solid 6-foot, 200-pound running back carried the ball 23 times. Opponents can expect 20-plus touches from this hard-to-bring-down back throughout the season. While senior Cason Bryant may have a little more cutting ability and a little more speed, Jenkins is a bulldozer that plows through lines and carries multiple tacklers with him. He gains the “tough yards” when the Bulldogs need it. And while that might be a little predictable in short-yardage situations, the defense still has to stop him — even when they know it’s coming.
Jenkins recorded his first 100-yard outing in the season opener with 123 yards, and he averaged 5.3 yards per carry. He also chalked up his first touchdown of the season from a couple yards out from the goal line. The junior had runs of 19 and 13 yards, but mostly used small gains to lead all ballcarriers during the game.
Following a 27-14 loss to the Class 3A Eagles in the opener, Luray now travels to Stuarts Draft this Friday night to take on the Cougars in the second-straight, non-district matchup for both teams.
Draft is also 0-1 on the season following a 28-12 loss to the Falcons of Central on the road in Woodstock last Friday night. Despite the loss, the Cougars marched down the field 65 yards on 10 plays against the Falcons on their opening drive and took an early 6-0 lead on Zakarre Hymes-Williams 11-yard touchdown run. After Central answered back, Draft retook the lead in the second quarter on a Falcon turnover, as Barndon Pritchett recovered a Central fumble at the Falcons 1 and took it in for the score. However, that would be the extent of Stuart Draft’s scoring on the night.
The Cougars ended up with 283 yards of offense in the game, with only 122 on the ground on only 36 total carries. Stuarts Draft quarterback Derrick Moore threw for 161 yards, and running back Baylor Graber ran for 75 yards on 12 carries. By comparison, Luray recorded 295 yards of offense in their opener, with all by 16 coming on the ground on 56 carries. Luray controlled the clock for 34 minutes.
Stuarts Draft had opportunities against Central, but turned the ball over three times, missed a field goal and had 12 penalties. The Bulldogs turned the ball over twice against the Eagles and were penalized six times.
Luray (0-1) travels to Stuarts Draft (0-1) to take on the Cougars for a 7 p.m. non-district kickoff on Friday, Sept. 5.
