Jobless rate jumps

March 5, 1987 — Page County’s unemployment rate jumped four points to 11.6 percent in January, but it marked Page’s lowest January rate in at least four years.

According to the Virginia Employment Commission, Page had a labor force of 8,942 workers in January, with 1,035 unemployed. In December, Page had a workforce of 9,287 with 693 jobless for a 7.5 percent rate.

Despite the increase, Page posted its best January jobless level in recent years.

Page’s unemployment rate was 16.3 percent in January 1984, 18 percent in January 1985 and 15.8 percent in January 1986.
