Kite qualifies for state indoor track meet with season-best time at FUMA

Hensley qualifies for state at VMI; several Panthers set season-best marks

FORK UNION, Jan. 25 — The Page County High School boys indoor track team keeps setting new season-highs. Junior Asher Kite ran a season-best 2:48.06 in the 1000-meter race on Saturday at the 36th annual Fred Hardy Jr. Invitational held at Fork Union Military Academy. That sixth-place finish automatically qualified Kite for the indoor state championships at Liberty University on March 5-6.

Aaron Hensley placed sixth in the 1600 meters at Fork Union, with a time of 4:46. Braxton Pettit finished eighth in the 55-meter hurdles on Saturday, with a time of :08.24. Pettit also set a new season-high in the triple jump at 36’10”.

On Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Walt Cormack meet at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Hensley ran a state-qualifying time of 10:18 in the 3200 meters. The junior also placed fifth in the 1000 meters with a personal-best time of 2:39.

Kite posted two season-highs (and personal records) at VMI in the 500 and 1000 meters, but barely missed qualifying for state in three events by a total of 10 seconds.

Pettit placed second overall in the 55-meter hurdles at VMI, with a new best of :07.98. He also had a season-best in the triple jump at 36’ 7.5”.  

Other season-best marks set in Lexington were Jaxon Staples in the 1600 and 500 meters, Tanner Weaver in the long jump, Nate Holloway in the shot put, and Brooklyn Miller in the shot put.  

The Panthers will next travel to Roanoke College on Saturday, Feb. 8 for their final regular season meet before the regional championship at Woodberry Forest on Feb. 15.
