August 27, 1989 — The J.E. Morgan Knitting Company is exploring the possibility of purchasing the old Comdial plant in Shenandoah. According to William P. Menefee of the Page Valley Economic Development Council, the company has completed a pre-employment survey and the council expects to hear from the firm in the near future. Menefee said that some 625 applications were taken by the company from local individuals.
“It was a positive turnout as far as the labor force is concerned,” Menefee noted. “Now we’re just waiting to hear from them.”
In a telephone interview Tuesday, Jim Miller, a J.E. Morgan manufacturing manager in Mount Jackson, said the area would “probably give us the type of individuals we need to start” but that “other contingencies must be met.”
The company, which has been in existence since the 1950s, manufactures cold weather underwear, Miller said. J.E. Morgan has 22 plants nationwide, with headquarters in Tamaqua, Pa.
