Landfill search at standstill

March 27, 1991 — The Page County Landfill Committee is at a standstill until they receive further instruction from the board of supervisors. Leonard Joyce and Jim Reynolds of Joyce Engineering told the committee Tuesday night that the search for a potential site has not resulted in an area that is “both available for purchase and technically acceptable.”

The committee and the engineering firm have spent several months reviewing available technical data, placing newspaper advertisements for land to purchase and have held several public meetings and news conferences.

“It now appears necessary to modify the siting process in order to identify good sites from a technical basis and then determine how and at what cost the best sites can be obtained,” Reynolds said.

The supervisors established a criteria that they wanted to find a willing landowner to sell property to the county for a landfill. According to a report from Joyce Engineering, that single criteria has kept the committee from at least four potentially good sites.
