LURAY, April 22 — The Luray High School boys cross country team is headed to Green Hill Park in Salem this afternoon to compete in the 2A state cross meet. The 10-man team won the Region 2B title at New Market Battlefield one week ago, with four members earning All-Region honors and Coach Steven Printz being named the region’s Coach of the Year.
“This group pulled together at the right time and ran as a team,” Printz said of the region champs.
Seniors Sam Liscomb and Philip Roy earned All-Region honors, along with sophomores Conner Janney and Brandon Shores.
Liscomb lead the Bulldogs and finished second overall at the Region 2B meet last Thursday with a time of 19:28.11. Less than 20 seconds behind Liscomb was Janney with a time of 19:47.97 to take fourth place. Along with Philip Roy’s 14th place finish (20:45.39) and Brandon Shores 15th place finish (20:47.42), the Bulldogs claimed the top team score just three points ahead of second-place Madison. Stonewall Jackson, Buffalo Gap, Clarke and Stuarts Draft rounded out the top six teams at the region meet.
Page County’s Jadon Huffman took 10th place with a time of 20:13.94, while teammate Kylar Sullivan finished 21st (21:17.67). Luray’s J.T. Drake helped round out Luray’s top five runners, as the senior earned 25th place (21:33.95). LHS junior Calder Liscomb crossed the finish line four second later to finish 26th (21:37.95).
Ben Cromer of Buffalo Gap crossed the finish line first at the region meet with a time of 19:17.77.
Both Luray and Madison advanced to today’s state meet in Salem as teams, in addition to the top three finishers not on those teams — Ben Cromer, Buffalo Gap; Patrick Stapleton, East Rockingham; and Zach Wine, Stonewall Jackson.
Strasburg won the Region 2B girls cross country meet, also held at the New Market Battlefield last Thursday. Both the Rams and second-place Clarke County will advance as teams. Stonewall Jackson finished third and Madison County fourth. Kate McLearen of Madison County posted the best time at 21:01.78. LeLe Warrick of LHS finished in 10th place (25:11.71), while Summer Kite of PCHS came in 18th (26:18.94).
