July 31, 1966 — A barn on the Howard R. Dinges farm, about one-half mile northwest of Luray on the Bixler’s Ferry Road, was struck by lightning Thursday night of last week and was completely destroyed in the resulting fire. Over 1,000 bales of straw and some farm machinery were said to have also been lost. The Luray Fire Department answered the 8:20 p.m. alarm, but due to the tremendous headway the fire had gained, were unable to save the barn or contents. They made several trips back to a town fire plug to replenish the water in the tank truck and prevented the fire from spreading to other property. The fire occurred during a severe electric and rain storm.
