Local athletes earn nine Region 2B titles

Page County High School took three region titles and qualified five to the state indoor track meet March 5-6 at Liberty University.

Indoor track championships held Feb. 17 at Woodberry Forest

LURAY, Feb. 17 — On Monday at Woodberry Forest, local athletes captured nine Region 2B titles and about a dozen qualified to compete at the VHSL Class 2 state indoor track championships March 5-6 at Liberty University.

The Page County boys indoor track team had five members qualify for the state meet, including three individuals and a relay team. Sophomore Braxton Pettit won the Region 2B championship in the 55 meter hurdles (7.87), while also qualifying for state in the 55 meter dash (6.89) with a third place finish. Junior Aaron Hensley won the region title in the 3200 meter run (10:05.04), and took another championship as a member of the 4×800 relay team (9:10.25). The other members of the first-place 4×800 relay team are sophomore Jaxon Staples, junior Asher Kite and senior A.J. Bosley. Staples also qualified for state with a third place finish in the 1600 meter run (5:21.97).

Hensley qualified for the state meet with times posted at previous meets in the 1000, 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Pettit had previously qualified in the 55 meter hurdles, and Kite has qualified previously in the 1000 and 1600 meter runs.

Luray sophomore Azmani Jackson won the region championship in both the 300 meter dash (38.01) and the 500 meter dash (1:08.46).

Those just missing the cutoff for state qualifying, but still finishing in the Top 5 were:

  • 4th place — James Farrow, senior, LHS, 55 meter dash (6.93)
  • 4th place — James Farrow, senior, LHS, 55 meter hurdles (8.33)
  • 4th place — Jaxon Staples, sophomore, PCHS, 1000 meter run (3:12.64)
  • 4th place — Nate Holloway, sophomore, PCHS, shot put (41-01)
  • 5th place — LHS 4×200 meter relay team (1:47.91)

Overall in the boys division, Page County finished in fourth place as a team, while Luray finished fifth in the region.

Luray senior Annah Wood earned two region titles in the 1000 meter run (3:22.48) and the 1600 meter run (5:57.52). Sophomore Maya Jenkins won the region championship in the 3200 meter run (14:02.14). The Luray girls team also took home a region title in the 4×800 meter relay.

Luray junior Lucy Currle qualified for state in two events with two second-place, region runner-up finishes, including the 55 meter hurdles (9.96) and the high jump (4-11).

Several Bulldogs and one Panther just missed the cutoff for state qualifying in the girls division, but still finished in the Top 5:

  • 4th place — Alyson Shores, senior, LHS, 300 meter dash (48.28)
  • 4th place — Amalie Kramer, senior, LHS, 500 meter dash (1:35.68)
  • 4th place — Isabela Rizek, sophomore, LHS, 1600 meter run (6:27.54)
  • 4th place — Maryn Cave, junior, PCHS, 3200 meter run (15:55.14)
  • 4th place — Kristina McLain, sophomore, LHS, 55 meter hurdles (10.46)

Overall, Luray finished fourth in the girls division, while Page finished seventh in the region.
