VERONA, Nov. 6 — Luray senior Annah Wood and Page County junior Aaron Hensley finished among the Top 5 at the Region 2B cross country meet held Wednesday afternoon at Fort Defiance High School. A total of six local runners finished among the Top 10 between the boys and girls meets — earning All-Region honors and qualifying for the VHSL Class 2 state cross country championships Nov. 16 at Virginia Tech.

Wood took third place in the girls division after completing the 5000-meter run in 22:34.1 Clarke County’s Teya Starley was the Region 2B champion with a time of 21:17. Luray junior Carolina Wood finished in 23:38.6, earning 10th place and All-Region honors as well.

During last week’s Bull Run District cross country meet at the New Market Battlefield, Annah Wood also took third place honors in the 5k with a time of 22:58.3. Her region time this week improved by 24 seconds. Carolina Wood finished fifth at the district level and improved her time by 49 seconds at region. Luray sophomore Maya Jenkins came in 8th at district (25:13.8), Page County sophomore August Beatty was 12th in the Bull Run (25:32.9), and Luray sophomore Isabela Rizek finished 13th (25:39.7).

Beatty finished 18th at this week’s Region 2B meet among 52 competitors, improving her time to 24:45.7 (47 seconds better) — just missing the cutoff to qualify for the state meet. Rizek came in 20th at region with a time of 24:57.1 — an improvement of 42 second over her district performance.

As a team, Clarke won the girls division in cross country at the district and region levels, while Luray finished second as a team at district and third at region. Clarke, Fort Defiance and Luray all qualified their girls teams to the state cross country championships.

In the boys division, Hensley took fifth place among 49 competitors with a time of 18:08.5. Madison County junior Evan Roberts won the Region 2B championship in an impressive 17:34.8. Hensley, who finished in eight place at last week’s Bull Run District meet, improved his 18:35 district time by 27 seconds. Luray senior Wyatt Seal came in sixth at the region meet on Wednesday (18:09.6) after finishing 10th at district last week (18:55.9) by improving his time by 46 seconds.

Luray senior standout runner Davey Johnson finished eighth at region (18:15.7) and fourth at district (18:12.4). Page County junior Asher Kite placed ninth at region (18:20.3) and ninth at district (18:37.7)

As a team, Clarke won the boys division in cross country at both the district and region levels, while Luray finished third at both levels. Page County took fourth place at the Bull Run meet. Clarke, Stonewall Jackson and Luray all qualified their boys teams to the state cross country championships.

For Luray, this is only the second time that the Bulldogs have sent both a boys and girls cross country team to the state meet in the same year. The last time was the 1A state championships in 2015. Overall, this is only the second time a girls cross country team from LHS has qualified for state (as a team, not individuals), and the 13th time for boys. In recent years, the LHS boys qualified as a team in 2016 (1A) and 2021 (2A).

The VHSL Class 2 state cross country championship will be held Saturday, Nov. 16 at Virginia Tech.
