October 12, 1989 — Members of the Luray Little League presented their concerns about the lack of a field to the Luray Town Council Monday night and got a surprise — they were told to look for about 2-1/2 acres of land.
It was the latest chapter in a saga which began in 1986 when the town sold the land where the Little League Park and Veterans Memorial stadium stood to the Page County School Board. The school system sought the property for construction of improving the athletic facilities for Luray High School.
At the time of the sale, the Luray Little League was assured that they will have a field to play on through 1989. After this past season, however, work began on a new football field/track at the site.
Luray had hoped to be working on a new town park to be located off Sixth Street and have a Little League field ready by the start of the 1990 season. However, a $200,000 matching grant which the town applied for has not yet been approved, so work has not yet begun.
