Region 1B rankings have Bulldogs at No. 2 in both football and volleyball

LURAY, Sept. 26 — One year ago this week, the Virginia High School League announced that under its mid-cycle realignment that Luray High School would be moving from the Class 2 competition level down to Class 1 during the 2025-26 school year. While the Bulldogs remain in the Bull Run District and struggle in some sports against larger schools like Central of Woodstock, Clarke County and Strasburg, their postseason prospects look a little brighter this year as Luray is currently ranked No. 2 in the region in two sports this fall.

Updated on Monday, Sept. 22, the Luray football team currently sits at No. 2 in Region 1B just behind Altavista. Sussex, Franklin and Cumberland high schools round out the Top 5, as follows on the rating system:

  • 1. Altavista — 16.25
  • 2. Luray — 16
  • 3. Sussex — 15.5
  • 4. Franklin — 13
  • 5. Cumberland — 12.5
  • 6. Riverheads — 12
  • 6. Buffalo Gap — 12
  • 8. Surry — 11.75
  • 9. Brunswick — 9.25
  • 10. William Campbell — 8

The Bulldogs (2-2) will be looking for their third-straight victory this Friday night as they host Parry McCluer (3-0) at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26 at Bulldog Field. Luray picked up its first win over Class 3 William Monroe, 48-27, on Sept. 12, followed up by a 51-14 victory on the road at Rock Ridge last Friday night. The Bulldogs are averaging more than 400 yards of offense per game, and had three running backs post more than 150 yards during last week’s non-district win — Caleb Cyphert (176 yards), Cason Bryant (167 yards) and Ryan Jenkins (157 yards).

The Region 1B football playoffs (8 teams) will be as follows — Quarterfinals, Nov. 14; Semi-finals, Nov. 21; Finals, Nov. 29.

After starting the season at 0-6, the Luray volleyball team has won five of their last six matches. The Bulldogs are second in the Bull Run standings at 5-1, and they are also No. 2 in the Region 1B standings just behind the Appomattox Regional Governors School. Those Region 1B standings are as follows:

  • 1. ARGS — 5.75
  • 2. Luray — 5.42
  • 3. Cumberland — 4.8
  • 4. Riverheads — 4.4
  • 5. Altavista — 4.1
  • 6. Buffalo Gap — 3.91
  • 7. William Campbell — 3.89
  • 8. Surry — 2.333
  • 9. Rappahannock — 2
  • 10. Franklin — 2

Luray is coming off of district sweeps of Page, Rapp and Stonewall, and is being lead this season by senior Reese Fitton. Coming up, the Bulldogs have eight district matches to conclude the regular season, including a match at home against Clarke at 7:15 p.m on Tuesday, and another home match at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday against Central.

The Region 1B volleyball playoffs (8 teams) will be as follows — Quarterfinals, Nov. 3; Semi-finals, Nov. 6; Finals, Nov. 8.

The Luray golf team just qualified for the Region 1B tournament (as a team) after four players made a strong showing at the Bull Run District Tournament at Bryce on Sept. 22 — Will Judy (83), Blake Turner (85), Landon Wood (88), and Matthew Owens (94). The Bulldogs will compete in the Region 1B Golf Tournament on Monday, Sept. 29 at The Manor golf course in Farmville.

Cross country state qualifiers will be determined at the Region 1B meet on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at Altavista.

After facing Class 2 competition (or above) throughout the regular season, Luray will drop down to Class 1 competition for region and state competitions in the postseason. The Virginia High School League’s mid-cycle realignment calls for Luray to remain at the Class 1 level for two years before moving back to Class 2.

With a reported enrollment of 343 students (in 2024), Luray was under the 5-percent minimum for Class 2, thus prompting the drop to Class 1. The new classification will remain in place for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 school years. Riverheads, with 337 students in the Shenandoah District, also made the same move.
