LURAY, Feb. 21 — The Luray boys basketball team rolled over the Wolverines of Carver Academy in a Region 1B quarterfinal on Friday night, 65-33. Senior Connor Hilliard lead the Bulldogs with 17 points, followed by senior Matthew Owens with 14.
While the Bulldogs’ offense hit 50 percent from the floor in the first half, Luray’s defense stymied the Wolverines, who went 4-for-23 and committed 10 turnovers in the first two frames. Luray recorded six steals from five different players in the opening 16 minutes. The No. 2 Bulldogs lead the seventh-seeded Wolverines, 39-13 at halftime.
Luray hit three of its eight three-pointers on the night in the third quarter, while Carver went 3-for-15 from the floor. The Bulldogs took a 58-21 lead into the fourth quarter and substituted freely. The home team got great bench play from junior Cade Horn, who had 11 points in the region semifinal including a three-pointer. Luray cruised to a 32-point victory, 65-33.
Senior Amari Bullock lead Carver with 10 points, followed by sophomore Jabari Boone with six. Overall, the Wolverines shot 24 percent from the floor and hit 50 percent at the line, while committing a total of 11 turnovers.
Junior Ayden Haddock added six points (all in the first quarter) before he went down with a leg injury in the third period. He would re-enter the game later on and appear to be okay. Junior Will Judy and sophomore Cole Hilliard both recorded five points on the night. Overall, the Bulldogs hit 43 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the line, while committing an uncharacteristic 16 turnovers.
